I ‘Get’ Drake Now!

I understand why the Drake persona resonates with so many fans.  He’s easy to relate to and his story is pretty unique relative to most rap artists.   Awesome.  Good for him.   But what about his technical ability?  What about Drake is it that fans are responding to.  He’s not an especially great technical rhymer  statistically and his word dexterity is below average.  So, from a technical point of view, what is it than fans love about the guy?  Well, I think I have an answer.  Take a look at this verse from Best I Ever Had:

+Sex, Love, Pain+ baby, I be on that Tank shit
Buzz so big, I could prolly sell a blank disc
When my album drop, bitches'll buy it for the picture
And niggas will buy it too and claim they got it for they sister
Magazine paper girl, the money ain't the iss-ue
They bring dinner to my room and ask me to initial
She call me the referee, 'cause I be so official
My shirt ain't got no stripes, but I can make ya pussy whiiiiiiiiiis-tle
Like the Andy Griffith them song
...And who told you to put them jeans on?
Double cup love, you the one I lean on
Feelin for a fix then you should really get ya fiend on
Yeah, just know my condo is the crack spot
Every single show she out there reppin like a mascot
Get it from the back and make ya fuckin bra strap pop
All up in ya slot 'till the nigga hit the jackpot

Do you see it?  It’s quite simple.  Drake’s appeal comes from putting a lot of effort into making sure the last rhyme in each line is as close to perfect as possible.  Is this quantifiable?  Yes.  It’s based on a probability score.   So, the more perfect the rhyme the higher the value.  And in fact, Drake’s score of 6.9 on this track is one of the highest in the database.

Drake.  I understand yooouuuuuuuuu.

First off, just wanted to commend you on creating a GREAT site. I was just wondering if you are going to write some more articles about Lil Wayne’s style/technical ability.

Weezy is pretty interesting as a case study. I’ll put something up as soon as I get the chance!
